You don't need open space above the refrigerator. We had our cabinets built to the refrigerator install specs (84"). I didn't do the install but you'll want a little space for adjustments of the legs to make perfectly level and for door alignment. If you squeeze in a 83.5" appliance into a 83.5” space there is no adjustment room.
