A:Answer I had the same question when I bought these. Provided that you input the Bass outputs from your receive into each speaker's inputs, and provided you plug the speakers into an AC outlet, I don't think a subwoofer is necessary. I do NOT have the bass settings turned up all the way and I get more bass than I need. You can feel the bass and it will rattle windows. Consistent base with movies, streaming music and gaming.
