Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I myself wondered why fingerprint readers aren't more common in laptops than they are, especially considering you can find them in cell phones listing for under $100. The answer is: 1. Microsoft has more stringent requirements for fingerprint readers on computers than those on cell phones, making camera access considerably cheaper; 2. The hardware/software is completely different. Laptops require an extra dedicated microcontroller to process the biometric data securely. 3. Modified tooling for the laptop chassis (cutting a specific hole in the deck or sourcing a specialized power button). 4. Smartphones are held and occasionally wiped clean, and this avoids specific environmental frustrations. Laptop sensors are highly susceptible to small amounts of surface friction, sweat, dirt, or cold/dry skin, leading to a high False Rejection Rate. If a user has to repeatedly lift and press their finger three times before it registers, they often get frustrated and fall back to typing a PIN anyway, making the hardware redundant.
