I just looked this up. Yes, you can switch out of S mode. Once you do, you cannot switch back into S mode (why would you anyway?)

Just to add, there are three ways to revert to S mode after switching, and both are problematic. As stated, you can reinstall the OS, but you can also edit the Registry or perform a full factory reset, which, like a full OS reinstall, will wipe out everything in the drive.
