Yes, there is a two brightness level backlight for the keyboard. As for CAD, yeah it works fine. I run Rhino 6, AutoCAD and Revit on it, all fine. It doesn't have a dedicated graphics card, so if you render you will want to render either with a cloud render or with the CPU. CPU rendering works fine for me since the Ryzen 7 is fast enough and 12 GB is sufficient for most single image renderings I do. Fair warning though, the SSD isn't the largest, so you will want to either have a cheap external drive to save files to or replace the internal SSD as CAD files tend to get big, depending on what program you use. Small price to pay, since it's a good idea to have an external drive to backup all your files and projects to anyways.
