“If this model doesn't have the DVD slot, how are windows backups accomplished to save files in the event the computer crashes or gets a virus? (I'm totally old school and currently working with a 10 year old computer and NOT even remotely tech savvy.)”

Get yourself a separate 2 terror bite external hardrive.. And save everything important on it.. It also keeps the computer open with more space..
