You have to use the DisplayPort cable to have 144htz at 1440p. You also have to use the DisplayPort cable to use G-Sync.

Must have display port to get 144 hz. Currently, HDMI's limit is 60 hz.

No. Because the monitor only supports HDMI 1.4 for its input via HDMI (see page 13 of https://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/127123.pdf), the highest refresh rate you can achieve at 1440p resolution via HDMI is 60 Hz.

Display port only. HDMI will only get you 60hz at 1440p

With the new HDMI 2.0 you can reach 144hz with HDMI

You need display port and a video card like Nvidia gtx 970 or higher. I don't know about lower video cards.
