Yes, it really is a SSD drive. I was also skeptical because of the price. Dell does now offer the 1 TB drive option, but at an additional cost of $600.

Only 1 pcieSSD can be installed and it's definitely a 1TB single pcieSSD... Dell charges $500 extra to upgrade from 512GB to 1TB I think I saw MS store when it was offered charge $700 extra to upgrade from 512GB to 1TB.... MicroSoft store has since removed 1TB option If you're in the market you better grab this system as they'll be going fast, plus you have until 1/24/2016 to return it for full refund...

This means the SSD in this laptop is 2-3 times faster than SSD's in most laptops on the market. Most laptops use SATA based SSD's. Those max out around 4-500 mb read/write. The pci-e SSD in this dell will give you 1000+ mb read/write. So to answer your question the SSD in this dell is the best you can get at this current point in time for laptops of this size. Dell has the same laptop for sale on it's site for nearly $500 more. The price at best buy is a STEAL at only $100 or $200 more than the 512gb version.
