Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The XPS17 9700 comes with four USB-C/Thunderbolt ports, two on the left side and two on the right side. There are three common full-size USB connectors: * Type A (12 mm width): This older interface is used by most USB memory sticks and other older USB devices. * Type B (8.45 mm width): This is rarely found on PC's. It is used on some USB devices. * Type C (8.25 mm width): This is the new USB connector found on recent PC's. It can be plugged in either side up. I purchased a XPS 15 three years ago and this was the USB connector used. This connector can connect external USB-C memory sticks, the included power supply, and external devices needing very high speed data communication to your PC. USB-C memory sticks have been available for several years. Note that USB-A and USA-C are connector interface types, while USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 are interface specifications which deal with speed and power. You can use a thumb drive with a USB-A connector in either a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port on a PC. I have a USB 3.0 thumb drive with a USB-A connector at one end and USB-C connector at the other end. One Dell DA20 adapter is included in the XPS17 box. It has a USB-C connector which plugs into the XPS17 and provides USB-A and HDMI ports, so it can be used to connect one external USB-A device (such as an older memory stick) and one HDMI external monitor. See: https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000124920/the-da20-multi-port-usb-type-c-adapter-is-drop-in-box-for-xps-systems The Dell DA300 mini-dock (not included) also has a USB-C connector which plugs into the XPS17 and lets you connect an external LAN using an RJ45 connector, a HDMI monitor, a VGA monitor, a Display Port monitor, a USB-C device, and a USB-A device. See: https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-usb-c-mobile-adapter-da300/apd/470-acwn/networking I normally use my Best Buy Dell XPS17 9700 with the Dell DA300 mini-dock with I separately purchased. I leave my LAN cable, HDMI external monitor cable, and my Plantronics wireless headset USB-A dongle plugged into the DA300 at all times, and the DA300 includes a short cable plugged into of the PC USB-C ports. The XPS17 power supply (included in the box) is plugged into the second USB-C port. That leaves two USB-C ports unused. I can plug the included Dell DA20 adapter into one of those USB-C ports if I want to use a USB-A mouse or USB stick, and plug my USB-B/C dual interface thumb drive into the last USB-C port on the XPS17. The DA20 is small and can easily be carried with me if I want to work remotely, and the DA300 is also small enough to be carried along.
