Speaker wires SHOULD be the same length, at least in speaker pairs so that the amount of resistance is the same on the amp load. You can hide the extra length if one run is shorter than another, but your amp will last a lot longer if they are matched. So it's worth it...

It will work fine with any speaker wire so long as you are careful to match the - and +. However, using speaker wires that are the matching with gauge appropriate for the distance and power of the amp is recommended for best performance. Whether or not you would notice the difference in quality is something you would have to judge.
