I believe that "pass-thru" refers to the receiver's ability to pass a signal through even when it's not powered on. I have my DirecTV box plugged into the Denon. To keep it simple for some household members and visitors, I tell them to just use the DirecTV remote to watch TV and adjust the TV's own sound as needed. The Denon receiver is able to handle passing the signal on when it is "off". For me, I power on the Denon using my Logitech Harmony remote so that I have better sound.
