I don't know if you can only use it in manual mode, but you do have to have the power cord plugged in for it to work.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.It does take power to work. It doesnt automatically switch for me. It comes with a remote and you can switch at unit. I usually switch it at unit because I have it hidden and the remote doesnt work well when its hifdden.

From what I could find out, it will auto switch as soon as you fire up another connected/plugged in hdmi device but only if you turn off the previous one. From some of the reviews I found, as an example, if you are using your xbox and fire up the dvd, it will stay on xbox if you still have it on but it will switch to the next device if you turned it off. I don't own one but I hope I'm right. As far as power goes, there is a power input so I would say, yes, you have to plug it in. Get a power strip to accommodate more plugs/outlets.
