• Yes it will work for 720p. In fact probably about the best resolution it will provide.

• The TV must have an optical connection for this product to be connected. Also, the other device you are connecting must also have an optical connection. You may want to consider buying a home theater system that has a receiver with multiple inputs, which would allow you to connect all your devices to the receiver and run a single HDMI to the TV. You could then change the input on the receiver to choose the device you want to use, without continuously changing cables.
