It's the "cool" factor, plus, it can be used cordlessly. 
A curling iron can be fou d for less than $100, but not cordless, and not with flexing copper plates that curve around the hair to give a more efficient coverage and therefore more efficient heating.
In the end, its expensive,absolutely- it's like an Audi versus a Ford. One works great and is perfecrly sufficient  and one works really great, and is superflous.
