“Does this remote themostat have batteries or does the unit plug into the wall electric outlet? If it uses batteries, are they traditional AA OR AAA? Do they have to be replaced or recharged?”

The remote sensor use small 3V coin batteries. Those batteries will late up to 3 to 4 years. The ecobee will notify you when the batteries are almost dead. The Main Thermostat is wired directly to the heating and cooling equipment. It gets power from there.
