“Can the be used without the motion sensing? As in, can they only use the ambient temp to determine if the HVAC goes on or does it always rely on human presence? If I'm on the couch and it doesn't detect me will it disregard the temperature?”

Yes it can work w/out motion sensing. Therefore, no it will not disregard the temp if it doesn’t sense you on couch. There’s 3 comfort settings and you decide which sensor works on what comfort setting. For example, at night I have my room as the main sensor. Even if it says unoccupied because there’s no movement, we’re asleep, it will be the primary one because I have it set as the one to work for sleep setting. We set the hours for ech setting too.

You can set each sensor and the thermostat to maintain the temperature regardless of occupancy status (I have mine set this way) or set it to not detect occupancy at all. If you do use the occupancy settings it will adjust the heat/air to make that room more comfortable but this has not been necessary to keep the entire house comfortable.
