It requires a neutral anyway and if your in the U.S. you can just use one of the 120 legs and neutral to hook it up. You only will need to break one leg to the device your turning on and off and leave the other leg for the 220 intact. Just make sure it's a neutral and not an uninsulated ground your hooking to the white wire. It may not be rated for 240 but will still work if there is a neutral wire in the switch box. This type of installation is not against nec code.
