You hard wire one of the units to the modem, and the other two units are set up wirelessly. We had Geek Squad install. To start, they activated all 3 units in the room with the modem, and then they moved the two wireless units to where we wanted them afterwards. Also, can only set this up using a smart phone app (does not have internet router page like other routers). Overall, this seems to be working pretty well. Our old set up was not very good and we had several dead zones. So far, this set up has been much better. Hope this helps.
