Tri band uses a third frequency on the 5Ghz channel (5.8 GHz), which typically has less traffic. This band is usually used in Wi-Fi 6 mesh system between mesh point devices. Tri band 5 and 6, I guess is what you’re referring to Wi-Fi tri band? similar concept, except newer standards, ax vs ac chips, with faster connection, more devices, etc, and better for “home automation” I think.
Sorry, there was a problem. If you see a router with Dual Band it means it has or can run at 2 different frequencies with different channels. One channel usually at 2.4Ghz the other 5Ghz. The Tri Band has 3 one at 2.4Ghz and 2 at 5Ghz. If you call it bandwidth or frequency each have plus and minuses. 2.4 GHz has greater range but has a lower data transmission rate and is prone to interference. 5 GHz has smaller range but better data transmission and less prone to interference. One thing to remember is most IoT around the house like cameras, door locks, hue lights, smart outlets, garage mostly use 2.4Ghz and your laptop, phone, tv and anything that streams usually will use 5Ghz. That’s not all inclusive but that’s how it tends to go. Some routers allow you to separate the bandwidths so you have more control over what connects to what. You’ll know if your neighbors have separated the frequency because it show 2-3 different WiFi names. ie. Family 5G, Family 2.4 if it’s a dual. My NightHawk allowed me to separate the BSSIDs but my eero does not. Although if I need an IoT accessory to link that runs on 2.4Ghz I can pause the 5Ghz frequency for 10min so that only the 2.4Ghz is available for the accessory to link. In every frequency has a number of channels that can be chosen. An accessory using 2.4Ghz will usually choose a lower common channel like 9. Usually most routers will auto choose the channel and will end up using the same channel as the one your neighbor happens to be using because it is a solid channel until the whole neighborhood is using the same. This unknowingly this will create interference causing slow data speeds. There are apps to see what your neighbors routers are running allowing you to change your channel accordingly. Some routers like Net Gear will allow you to pick your channel my new eero doesn’t seem to but honestly as good as it runs I have no need to figure out which channel is best for me. Please keep in mind this information comes from research throughout the years for myself and I am not all knowing. I hope this will help you.
