Now the question just because you can, does it mean you should...? Sonically, these speakers were designed to be upright so that the drivers are in a vertical alignment. Will the sound characteristics be different on a horizontal plane, yes. Will you notice the difference, depends on how critical of a listener you are. You will notice a lot of the better center channels for home theater realign the tweeter to sit above the woofer while horizontal, there by keeping the vertical alignment per the design of the matching left right speakers. So in the end just like most things in home audio, its a user decision. You can set then up a listen and decide for your self if the sound works for you.

If you don't want to scratch them up, I suggest using kitchen shelf padding. I have some on my speaker stands and it not only protects the speaker, but also keeps the speaker in place. Nice speakers!
