“I don't understand what this thing does. The description says it captures video and audio from your camera but so what? My camera already does that. Why do I need another device to do what my camera already does?”

This is a passthrough device for a laptop or PC, it takes the live view from your camera, and converts it to that your computer can see it, this allows you to use nicer cameras as a web cam. While there are cameras that have outputs that can be plugged into your computer, this is not for those, but more for dslrs.
