Let me start by saying that the fan does not even turn on for things like watching movies or surfing the web or anything like that. Doing minor tasks like that results in literally (i mean put your head next to the laptop and listen) NO sound. However, doing things that require a lot of power (for me playing CIV 5) results in the fan kicking in. Even then, the fan is still pretty quite. Its noticeable, but certainly tolerable. I have heard some people complain about their fan being high pitch and whiny, but this one is just a nice smooth lower fan noise. I personally think it is tolerable, but that is a decision you will ultimately have to make. I recommend that you buy the laptop (if you are really considering this model) try it out with high intensity programs and listen to the fan. If you can't stand it, just return it back to best buy within 15 days for a full refund. I did that with and ASUS (am currently doing that I should say) so it should not be a problem.
