Is the case aluminum or painted plastic? null

As light weight as the computer is, I would guess it is a polymer with a silver finish. I do not think it is painted on. I have not scratched it yet so I can't tell how deep the finish goes. I had a similar HP in black and it had a finish very resistant to scratching.

You know, I think it's both. I never noticed it before butt the back of the screen appears to be aluminum and the bottom section holding the keyboard, etc feels like hard plastic material. I think the top is aluminum and the bottom plastic.

This model has an Aluminum chassis.
