It has been my experience that HDMI is needed to get a desktop that fits on the monitor with readable text WHEN USING the ONBOARD chips. The Envy does not even have a VGA connection like a custom graphics card would offer. If you do use the VGA-HDMI adapter Windows won't know what resolution to optimize the desktop on the monitor. That is, a custom GPU card will offer more resolution options that are selectable. Win10 sets the monitor resolution auto-magically. One can buy a decent flatscreen monitor at Best Buy for under $125. Compare that cost against purchasing and rigging an adapter. Moreover, it has been my experience that Win10 with a VGA computer going to a digital input monitor gets bogged down trying to constantly optimize the desktop image to fit your monitor and you get aggravating experiences within the open, working windows as you refresh a minimize view -- the size of the widgets, text and graphics will fluctuate with usage when using the adapter.
