“I asked if the devices needed to be connected to the same network, the answer was yes... I guess what I really meant was will this work if there is no LAN or WiFi on site? Does the wireless create it's own network that the device connects to?”

The answer to the latter question is no. It has to be connected to the same network along with the devices. e.g. laptop, tablet or smartphone.
