Yes, you can temporarily print in black and white on an Epson XP-4200 from a computer even if a color ink cartridge is empty , but you must use the "Black Print Mode" or "black grayscale" setting in your printer driver. You cannot use the printer's control panel for this, and you should select plain or bright white paper as the paper type. The ability to print with an empty color cartridge is a temporary measure, and you will eventually need to replace it. When you go to print, if a color cartridge is empty, your computer will display a software message. Select Black Print Mode: From the message, choose to print using "Black Print Mode". Adjust Printer Settings: Open your document's print settings, select the paper type as "plain paper" or "bright white paper," and then select the "black grayscale" checkbox.
