• Hi Dan, If you mean the long horizontal plastic strip that flips up on the top, rear of the Expression Home XP-5200, it is there to allow the scanner on the top of the printer to open. When you lift the entire scanner open on the top of the printer to access the ink cartridges, the plastic piece flips up to allow it to open. Regards, Mark - The Epson Team.
