Here is a link to the Epson page that explains how to access the maintenance option. In my previous answer, I do recall the unit going into maintenance mode, but I do not recall how the printer switched to maintenance mode. However, while in maintenance mode is when the pad located below the ink carriage can be most easily accessed and cleaned of excess ink. https://epson.com/faq/SPT_C11CF27202~faq-0000bd1-xp440_446?faq_cat=faq-topFaqs
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I was having the same new printer cartridge not recognized issue, I had removed the double sized 302-XL and the new one was not recognized. I'm not sure how I did it exactly, but I recall pushing down on the cartridge for a few seconds while I hit the OK button. However, I also had cleaned the empty chamber and the cartridge underside with soft tissue paper, making sure to not snag any paper behind. But there is also an ink sponge pad BELOW the Ink chamber area, that has to be dabbed a few times with toilet paper. One will see ink being absorbed, by the TP. Dab a few times with clean parts of the tissue paper, wadding it up will help prevent getting ink on one's fingers. HOWEVER. the sponge pad can only be accessed when the entire Ink chamber moves away from the right side of the printer, and, it may suddenly snap back to the edge without warning. I dabbed it, moved my hand out of the way, I think I dabbed it again, the chamber did not move back and squish my hand because I was pretty quick about it. Works fine now. I wish I understood how to make the entire ink chamber move away from the side so I could turn the unit off when cleaning, but I have not been able to figure that out yet.
