• No, the printer will not print in black and white if the color cartridges are empty. It gives you an error and you have to replace the empty cartridges.

• No, and that can be a real pain. I ran out of yellow ink and just needed to print something in black and white. Stores were closed. Had to email the print to a neighbor who printed it for me. Probably just a way to sell more ink before you need it.

• Yes, you can, but you have to change a few print settings. Not sure just how long you can do this.
