To begin with on the tech side - there are no "cartridge's" per se! I purchased the printer because of the many pages I can print out without having to worry about running out of ink. I printed close to the 10,000 copies it claims to provide. I've done a combination black (mostly) and color printing. I would not trade this printer for anything!
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. There are no cartridges. You get bottles of ink around $13/each. So far I've printed 200 high quality 8.5X11 photo pages and 4,000 8.5X11 text pages (lots of full text pages) and have used about 35% of the bottles. To compare - I own an EPSON WF 7610 and printing 600 pages of the same text would make me change the black cartridge. So for me personally I'd say about 18-25 black cartridges, but it'd vary. If you are planning on printing only a few pages here and there one of the cheaper ECOtank printers might be good or a regular printer. However, if you are printing 1,000+ pages a week like us then you will recoup the savings on ink in a short period. We used to spend $50/week on ink at least and now it's about $40-$50/month.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The printer I have doesn't use cartridges - ET-16500 - it has 4 individual ink tanks. Black, cyan, red and yellow. The ink comes in standard bottles and you just pour each bottle into their respective plastic tanks that are located on the right side. At first startup the printer goes through a setup process distributing the ink to the proper places that it needs to go for printing. Your going to get an incredable amount of prints out of each plastic tank, but the drawback to these printers is the price. Mine was $995.00 roughly to purchase. There are cheaper models on the market. I bought the most expensive one available because it prints and scans 13" X 19". The cheaper models don't go up that high.
