• The 4740 does duplex scanning, the 4730 does not.

• I asked the sales person at the store the same question. He said the features are the same. The 4740 is just faster. You won't need the speed unless you are using the printer for a medium to large group of users. I'm using this at home so I bought the 4730 and it is plenty fast.
