“are the ink cartridges dated, is the ink non smug, water proof? I am gone for six month periods so I am worried the cartridges would dry up.”

I have not checked if the cartridges are dated. I just bought the printer and have not had any smudges yet or tested to see if the ink is water proof . So far it is working better than my last two printers (HP).
