• Yes it can be set to wifi only if desired. In my opinion hardwired is the best, but you have the wifi only option.

• Yes, you can use the doorbell without attaching a hardwire to a modem. The doorbell is paired with the Homebase. Firstly you need to connect the Homebase to your network using the ethernet cable. After the Homebase is connected successfully, you can go to "Homebase settings">"Connection">"Wi-Fi Setup" to connect the Homebase with your wifi.
