Hello AladdinSane! In order for the Fire Recast to be used it would have to be the primary recording device and be paired with a Fire TV (stick or TV) and an HD antenna. However, it does now currently support external hard drives if you wanted to use a device for added storage and if it is compatible. Thank you so much for your question and I hope you have a terrific day!

But if you want to watch one channel while recording a different channel, I suppose you could use a 3-way coaxial splitter connected to the end of the antenna. On the 3-way splitter going out from the antenna, connect one of the coaxial cables from the antenna to the "IN' antenna jack on the back of the DVR, another coaxial cable connected to the "IN" jack on the back of the TV, and the other cable to the "IN" jack on the back of the Recast. Of course your DVR and Recast are connected "IN" to the TV on different 'Inputs" . While recording on your DVR, you could switch TV 'Inputs' to either the TV or the Recast and watch different channels.
