The alarm can work stand-alone (i.e. it will alarm if there is smoke/CO). If this is all you are interested in then I wouldn't bother paying for the zwave capable device unless you are 'future proofing' If you wish to get notified through an application, you need to have a zwave hub to act as a bridge to your app and/or email system. This doesn't have to be a Ring branded hub but if you already have the Ring security system it works well with it (that is how I have configured my home). A couple notes about using these with Ring - one nice thing (besides getting clear alerts as to which device alarms) is that it will tell you if the battery is running low and needs changing. Rather than just changing the batteries every so often and likely tossing mostly good batteries away, you can watch for those that go low and replace when required.
