Hi, thank you for your question! It depends on the model. The battery operated model (SMCO600NV) uses six CR123A batteries which have a life expectancy of 3-6 years. The hard wired model (SMCO600NV-AC) does have a 10 year backup battery, as its main source is AC voltage.— Charlie
