I clip mine on my pocket, but keep it on the inside most of the time. Works just fine. Tried it once in my pocket (unclipped) and I'd say it was only 47-64% accurate.

You can also attach it just about anywhere that it can pick up motion from walking: waistband, pocket, bra (if you're a woman, of course!), and even the band of your underwear. Don't put it on your wrist because it will assume you're walking whenever your arms are swinging (talking animatedly, combing your hair, brushing the dog, etc.)
