“When I try to change channels I get a message on tv screen that says "this option is not available at this time". Mom has had this remote forever. Does anyone know how to fix so she can change channels?”

That is a message from the box, just use the STB /cable remote to exit. sometimes you may need to reset the STb box, as they do ver the air updates.
