Does the sim card assign you a number? null

FreedomPop will give you a new cell phone number unless you pay to port your old one. If you want to keep your old number, I would recommend porting it to Google Voice instead and just never using the FreedomPop number because the app FreedomPop requires for texting and calls is virtually nonfunctional. From the advice I read, most people with FreedomPop seem to use Google Voice/Hangouts/Hangouts dialer -- it is working fine for me and is a free workaround.

When activating the sim FreedomPop will ask if you want a new number or bring your old number to your phone. For customer service FP on twitter is quick and good.

Yes it will walk you through activation and then you get a selection of numbers to choose from. I have been on it for 4 years with no issues. Your service runs all thru at&t.
