Yes you do. It allows the hot air to vent out and helps dissipate any water it collects on the bottom tray. The tray can only hold so much water that you will have to drain it. So to avoid all that. I recommend putting the unit on a pedestal (step stool), attach the tube as to allow any excess water to drain to a simple container. This will keep the unit running and not shutting off when the bottom pan fills up. I haven't had to pour it out since I have down that, it saves time and hassle of draining and restarting the unit. Overall, the unit was the best decision. No more window unit and is easy to store in a corner once the season is done. I hope this helps.
