The side panels that extend out accordian style from each side of the unit to the edge of the window use that extra space if you attach them; if you put them both on, at their smallest collapsed size they would need 5” to fit. You could just leave them off (or leave only one off if you’ve got the space to use one on one side of the unit and push the other side right up against the side of the window. If you do leave them off, in a 20” window you will be left with 1 1/2 of open space on the sides that you could just plug with foam weather stripping or a piece of wood or something.

The width dimensions would be different from the width of the air conditioner, because the adjustable sides have to be factored in.
