The fan should shut off when the dampness level you set is obtained and then kick back on when it exceeds that level.

I also have a separate device that includes a hygrometer that appears to be fairly accurate. I don't have extensive experience as yet, but from my observations the fan will shut off at times, directly relative to the humidity setting on the humidifier when the immediate humidity threshold is lower.
