Yes, it can be used as a temporary fridge for smaller items.

Not really. The racks are designed for horizontal placement of wine bottles. The only place you could put food is on the floor of the unit. Remember, a wine cooler is nowhere near a cool as a refrigerator - so I would imagine food would not store well enough in a unit like this.

This is not recommended by the manufacturer.
