Freestanding just means it has side panels that cover the ugly "guts" of the oven normally visible on the sides, so that you can put the stove somewhere it doesn't have counters to hide both sides, without it looking weird and exposed. Slide-in units don't have these panels because counters will presumably hide the sides anyway (this theoretically makes them slightly cheaper).
