It turns on and off when power is applied and remove. There is a power off timer that you can set to turn off after power is removed. Hope this helps.

When installing in your vehicle: Install hint: I used the CLEAR COMMAND Strips to rout the power cable around the dash/window, they worked GREAT.

When I start my car, it tells me how many parking videos I have, and then it goes into driving mode giving me lane departure, forward collision warning, traffic moving at a stop light, and recording what you say. I did buy a 64 GB memory card for it.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The way it works is that if you have it plugged in (which is how it is recommended) it will turn on when you start your vehicle. However, the way I have it setup is so it is not plugged in all the time because you have to feed the wire around the top panel of the car and I did not want to do that. So basically I plug it in when it is low on battery. It does have a sleep function so the screen will turn off after a certain amount of time but it will not turn off until you are ready to turn it off. But if you do not have the wire plugged in you WILL have to start it manually and turn it off manually as well. If you keep it plugged in it will start upon starting your car, but you WILL still have to turn it off manually as to be sure that it records everything just in case. Hope it helps

The Garmin 55 does have an internal battery that will operate it but I’m not sure of the battery life. There are menu options for how long it will run after the power is turned off, I have mine set for 15 seconds.
