To comply with the law in New York State, I rest the Garmin in the dashboard opening in front of the center consul where the plug-in for the unit is located. In my car, it's a perfect fit. Obviously, the visibility is not what it would be if the unit was mounted on the windshield, but the trade-off suits my purpose.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Not sure if you can get another type of mount from Best Buy or not, I have a bean bag type of mount that is available at the Garmin site. I too prefer it much better than the windshield mounts. The beanbag mount is black and can get hot in the summer and might discolor the dash where it sits. I put an old wash rag under the mount to protect the dash surface.
