No, you don't need an SD card, I do not have one for myself or the other family members that I bought them for. I believe that the SD card only allows you store more maps (mine stores the whole U.S., but with little storage space left) and other stuff like pictures.

It updates without using a lot of memory. My nüvi2589 has a lot of great features not included on lower priced models, like lifetime maps and lifetime traffic. My other one is a nüvi50LM, still good, but no traffic included. I got the 2589 at Best Buy, on sale last month for $157.99.
