“Can it be used to see my position while on a train? While my primary use for this is on a car, I'm going to be taking train trip, and I'm interested in seeing my dot move across country on a map. Will off road work for this?”

Yes, as long as the device is able to acquire satellites, then it will do its best to display its movement on the map. However, keep in mind, you will not be able to navigate with it while on a train. {CW}
