No you don't need a smart phone to get the data. However, he could connect it to a compatible computer and using Garmin Express upload the data to Garmin Connect where he will see more information. The readings will show on the watch but Garmin Connect can provide more data. You may want to go to support.garmin.com where you'll find many helpful FAQ's and video's on the functions of the device.
