It is by design, in my opinion to save on battery juice. Try inverting color, white background black fonts. That way its easier to read outside. My is very easy to see outside now.

It's low power (allowing the display to be on all the time while still achieving great battery life), and is very readable in direct sunlight (like e-ink). It's doesn't look as good as a normal LCD indoors, but that's not where you're most likely to be using it...and it is still perfectly readable.
